Video Codecs
A video codec is software that enables video compression and/or decompression for digital video. Video Codecs can be located online and are usually free to download and install on your PC.
The DivX Codec
Currently the most popular codec is DivX, which can compresses video to a fraction of its original size for efficient storage on computer hard drives and easy sharing of files online.
Compared to DVDs, DivX movies offer the same image quality at one-tenth of the size, which makes them perfectly suited for movie downloads where the bandwidth available usually is limited. This means that you can easily fit a full movie on a single CD, while still maintaining the original image quality of the DVD. The video is usually combined with AC3 or MP3 audio to provide both high quality audio and video.
There is now a wide range of DVD players available that support DivX, meaning that DivX files downloaded on line can usually be played in a home video entertainment system.

Burning "VIDEO_TS" Movies to DVD
Commercial DVD movies usually come in a "Video Title Set" format. This is characterized by a "VIDEO_TS" folder which contains the compressed video and sound files, which include:
* .VOB: These files contain the actual video and audio data, subtitles, additional viewing angles, pretty much everything you see and hear. They are up to a gigabyte in size and are numbered sequentially.
* .IFO: These files contain information about the .VOB files. Your DVD player will use these to locate and sequence the video and audio, figure out where each chapter begins and ends, etc. The .BUP files are backups of the .IFO files.
To burn a movie, select the "DVD Video" tab and use the Browse button to select the location of the Video_TS folder. Ensure that you have inserted a DVD into your burner, and press the burn button.
